Cabinet refacing can be a powerful and affordable upgrade when done right. There is nothing about leather paneling installation that is particularly difficult. If you are a good craftsman DIY… You can save half of the total cost. Check out some of our in-house projects

One bit of advice, unless you have had previous experience installing paneling and using adhesives, or are a good craftsman, we recommend that you hire a professional installer for the job. We just think you’ll be happier with the results 😉

‘Spaccato’ Leather Paneling – In-house Projects

Leather is resistant to fire. When something is resistant to fire it burns slower. That alone makes leather a great material for kitchen cabinet refacing. Leather stands up to wear and tear. It’s resilient, strong and durable. Since it’s already sealed, ‘Spaccato’ is easy to clean with a damp cloth (mix 1 part water 1 part white vinegar). Use saddle soap as and when it is needed if there are some major stains.

Kitchen cabinets refaced with ‘Spaccato’ leather paneling. These ‘Shaker’ style cabinet doors feature recessed panels that provide a nice “frame’ for the ‘Spaccato’ leather paneling application, see image 1 and 2 . There is no need for fasades (outside corner trim) when paneling this kind of cabinet. 1. 1. Pantry door and 2. Swing door refaced with Spaccato leather panels. We didn’t reface the entire kitchen cabinets because with 15 or more doors around the house refaced with Spaccato leather paneling it was a little bit overpowering.

One main rule to qualify as a cabinet refacing candidate… The kitchen cabinet boxes have to be in “good” condition

Videos and tutorials

Installation of Spaccato leather panels is very similar to applying the self adhesive covering shown on this video… Spaccato panels need to be affixed to cabinets or doors with liquid nails though. Self-stick panels are easy to work with but its adhesive is still strong, making the panels hard to remove and adjust once you’ve stuck it in place. Liquid Nails Interior Projects Adhesive is a better option for paneling, it allows you to adjust the panel after placing it, which can be a plus in cases of initial mounting mistake (just be sure to measure twice and cut once), and it cleans up easily with water. Use a veneer roller, not a scraper, to force out air bubbles. Exposed leather edges can be sanded with a 600 grit sandpaper and then tinted (Eco-Flo Gum Tragacanth / Fiebing’s Edge Kote ), or finished with project fasades corner trim for a clean, professional finish.

The hardest part of making a refacing job look neat is trimming the material (leather paneling or veneer) with a utility knife once it’s in place. It helps to keep your hand braced against the cabinets to steady it. Always use a sharp blade and work slowly (check out video above).

kitchen Reface Process…

Day One: Remove hardware from doors and drawer fronts (cabinet / drawer pulls and knobs) if you intend to keep this hardware. If not don’t worry about it. Remove doors and drawer fronts. dispose of old cabinet doors and drawer fronts. lightly sand down surfaces that will receive the leather panels with 150 fine-grit sandpaper in order to ‘ roughen’ down glossy paint in preparation for applying the leather panels. Clean with tack cloth.
Day Two: Begin measuring and cutting the leather panels.
Day Three: Begin refacing cabinet boxes, cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
Day Four: Finish refacing. Install new cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Install cabinet hardware. ‘Naked Kitchen Cabinet Doors’ lets you add hidden hinges at $8.00 per door (includes the hinges and routing the holes).

Installation

Boxed tiles and paneling should be opened on site and allowed to acclimate to temperature and moisture levels for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours. This is achieved by allowing air to flow freely between them. Leather tiles and leather paneling need 24 hours (above grade level) to 48 hours (below grade level – the surface of the ground that surrounds it.) to become acclimated to the environment. Leather tablets and panels are installed directly over concrete or wood. Installation should be on a clean, unfinished surface. The procedure is similar to that of vinyl flooring. (Watch video). Use a veneer roller which makes applying the material more easy.

Leather tiles, and panels, can be glued to a unfinished cement or plywood surface using contact cement. Never assume a room is perfectly square. Always square off from the center and begin pattern along one edge. Check the sub floor to make sure it is in good condition. It needs to be flat and completely smooth. An installation is only as good as the surface below. Cueros Arquitectonicos

On concrete sub floors, fill in any holes or low-lying areas with a patching compound. It’s important to cover imperfections since leather magnifies everything below it. All open sub floor seams should be properly grouted. As well, all nails & screws should be flush with plywood or countersunk, and filled. Wall Paneling is the perfect way to accent any wall. Leather tablets and panels are installed directly over concrete or wood. Installation should be on a clean, unfinished surface.

Our custom-made leather wall panels are prepared for our clients design specifications. Leather tiles can be applied directly to the wall or pre-applied onto panels for quick and accurate installation. Leather tiles are easy to install and maintain.

Liquid Nails is usually used for paneling. It allows you to make adjustments after placing the panel, which is definitely a plus in cases of initial mounting mistakes. Heavy panels need additional support, with nails 16 to 20 inches apart.

Fitting Electrical Boxes

Panel cutouts for switch and receptacle boxes can easily be made: Generously chalk around the edges of the switch or receptacle box. Then, hold the leather panel in position and tap it lightly against the chalked box. The box outline will have been transferred to the back of the leather panel when the panel is taken away.
